Boston Calling Case leads to the convictions of two city officials.

August 7, 2019

Jury finds Kenneth Brissette, director of tourism Kenneth Brissette, and Timothy Sullivan, director of intergovernmental relations, guilty of extortion for forcing a promoter to hire nine union workers for a concert on City Hall Plaza in 2014. The jury reaches the verdict despite instructions from U.S. District Court judge Leo Sorokin that, “It is not a wrongful purpose . . . for a public official to assist or favor his constituents or political supporters, or to act in the hopes of securing future political support.” Sorokin overturns the convictions, however, on February 12, 2020, declaring neither of the defendants “committed the charged offenses . . . [or] knowingly violated either state ethics law or local policy.”
